Aeolian Islands

Stromboli

SAILING HOLIDAYS

The island of Stromboli

The farthest and easternmost of the Aeolian Islands. The ancients called it Strongyle (the round one).

Worth a visit is the small town, located around the sandy Lena point where you arrive by disembarking at Ficogrande or San Vincenzo, which form a single town.

The second largest town, Ginostra, is a small village along the southeastern coast, accessible only by sea. The town, with about thirty inhabitants, extends along a steep slope, where the few houses still retain their traditional Aeolian architecture intact.

AN ENCHANTING PLACE

A still active volcano

Stromboli is the only volcano in Europe and one of the few in the world with ongoing eruptive activity. Its volcano is approximately 920 meters high and its seabed is very deep (1,200 meters). Its inhabitants commonly call it "Iddu" (He), demonstrating that the volcano is part of them, like a person or a very dear entity, almost as if to exorcise the fact of living at the foot of an active volcano.

The island's marine landscape is rich in caves, including the Grotto of Aeolus. Also characteristic are Strombolicchio, a steep rock rising 56 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, and the Sciara del Fuoco, a sheer rock face down which incandescent material slides into the sea. The latter, best seen at night, is accessible only by sea.

At night, its intermittent flashes can be seen from a great distance, which is why the island has been called the “Lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian Sea”.
